Computer-Based Testing

To access the first quiz in a course you will need:

  1. Your kerberos ID and password
  2. A special internet browser called the "Lockdown Browser" (for how to obtain this browser, see below)
  3. To enroll in the course (see instructions below)

Instructions to access a quiz:

A. If you DO NOT have the Lockdown Brower on your computer**:

  • Using your regular web browser, go to the NYU School of Medicine exam site: http://education.med.nyu.edu/exam/login/index.php
  • Sign in with your kerberos ID and password.
  • You will see a screen that will allow you to download the Lockdown Browser. Follow the instructions to download.
  • Once you have downloaded and installed the Lockdown Browser, sign off the exam site.

** Note: the Lockdown Browser will NOT WORK in a Virtual Windows environment on a Mac! You must install it in the OS X environment.

B. Using the Lockdown Brower for the first time in a course:

  • Start the Lockdown Browser. It will automatically take you to the exam site sign-in page. (Note: if you have any other programs running, you'll be asked to quit them before the Lockdown Browser can be activated.)
  • Sign in with your kerberos ID and password. You will be taken to the start up screen.
  • Click on the appropriate course category (e.g., "Foundations of Medicine: Genes, Molecules and Cells").
  • You will be asked if you wish to enroll yourself as a member of this course. Click the "Yes" button.
  • You will be taken to the selected course page.
  • Click on the quiz under "Topic outline".
  • The header page for the quiz will appear. Click the button ("Attempt quiz now" ) to take the quiz.
  • The next page asks for a password to get to the actual quiz: type in the quiz-specific password (this will be provided to you prior to the exam).
  • You should now be at the first question. Each question is worth 10 points. You will be given the chance to try a question twice if you give the wrong answer on the first attempt. There is a 5 point penalty for a wrong answer and "No Credit" for 2 incorrect answers. To move on to the next question after submitting an answer, click on the "Next" option or the number of the next question.
  • After answering the last question, click on "Submit All Answers" choice.
  • You will now leave the quiz BUT are still in the lockdown browser. To close the browser, click the small red circular button in the upper left-hand corner.
